Hoover Impulse Cordless Vacuum Review
We don’t usually review cordless vacuum cleaners between $150 and $200 because they are often disappointing.
We reviewed the Impulse BH53020 to make sure we could recommend it to our customers at that price point. Although cord-free vacuuming sounds appealing, not everyone can afford to spend $300-500.

One word of caution: If the vacuum cleaner is not made by a well-respected brand like Bissell, Dirt Devil, Dyson, Electrolux, Eureka, Hoover, Kenmore, Oreck, and Sebo, you should be suspicious. Some brands are not well-known, like Tineco.
A Word for the Wise
There are many attractive cordless vacuums available in this price range. Many of them are not known by their names. Be aware that beauty is not just skin deep. Some of these are junk!
Are You a Winner?
Hoover has not been able to provide a cordless vacuum that is practical in the motor head configuration or “weedwacker,” which has become so popular. Hoover was a bit too complicated and over-designed, in our opinion.
This made their products difficult for someone who simply wants a vacuum that is easy to use with cordless. The Hoover Linx Cordless Stick vacuum cleaner, which was and is still very popular, had a more traditional design.
So we were curious to find out if the Impulse Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner, BH53020, marked a turning point in Hoover’s history and a product we could recommend to our customers. We hoped that the new BH53020 would be a winner and meet the $150 market demand.

Our Experience With the Hoover Impulse BH53020
The Impulse BH53020 was finally ours. We gave it a few tests. It was tested on hardwood, area rugs, and carpet. We tested the Runtime and Recharge times. We were able to get a feel for the vacuum’s build quality and ease of use.
1. Qualitative Construction
We were not optimistic about the results we would get at the low price of $150. Normally, manufacturers cut corners on plastic parts’ strength to reduce costs. However, that’s not the case with the Hoover Impulse BH53020.
The motor’s main housing is strong enough to withstand daily use. The Filter Compartment and Dirt Cup are strong enough.
One thing we love about the Dirt Cup housing is that it is back-drafted (tapered) to prevent dirt and hair from sticking.
The Extension Tube is made from metal, so it’s very rigid. The motor-powered floor brush should withstand everyday use. The brush has a Brush Roll Release, which allows you to easily remove it for cleaning.
It is easy to use the joints that attach or detach the extension tubes from the main body and floor brush. Every electrical connector is designed to ensure a strong connection.
The Attachments aren’t what we would consider impressive. They work well and should last. Rubber tires ensure that the motorized floor brush won’t damage wooden floors.
The brush roll can be easily removed for cleaning. Another thing we love is its easy removal. This is particularly important for furry pets and anyone with long hair.
The overall build quality of the Hoover Impulse BH53020 vacuum is impressive, especially considering the price.
2. Cleaning Performance
Hardwood Floor
It was tested on oak hardwood floors. It was smothered in oatmeal and dried pet food. Large debris was no problem. It ate all of the pet food, except two extra-large pieces.

Filtration
Hoover did an excellent job designing the filter compartment. The filter compartment has one washable and removable cartridge that can be used with paper-like media. Although it is not HEPA-level, there are gaskets around the dirt cup and filter compartment to stop dust from leaking into the air.
To prevent the suction loss, it is essential to clean any vacuum cleaner. It is very simple to do this with the Hoover Impulse BH53020.
The metal mesh filter did not get clogged during our testing, even though some area rugs were shedding fibers. It is important to keep your filter clean as vacuum cleaners’ loss of suction can be a major complaint.
Its filtration system should be sufficient unless you or someone in the household is very sensitive to dust.
Above the Floor
Simply press the connector button on your extension tube or attachment to convert the Hoover Impulse BH53020 to the Handheld Mode. Each attachment can be easily clicked in place.
Although the Extension Tube took a bit of pulling to separate, it is not a major problem and should be easy to remove. A very small amount of Vaseline or Silicone lube can be used to resolve the problem.
Carpet
We found the Normal Mode for Carpet sufficient for cleaning carpets with dirt, hair, and other surface debris. The suction was strong enough to clean our rug, even if it was in a very dirty area.
Motorized floor brushes are great for loosening dirt and leaving piles looking neat.
3. Runtime
Hoover estimates that the BH53020 will last 18 minutes. It ran for 15 minutes in Normal Mode during our first test. We never experienced any performance drop. Our 222 sq. ft. office was cleaned at that time.
We cleaned the 222 sq. ft. office, including hardwood and area rugs. Two of the three Battery Power indicator lights were still lit, indicating plenty of reserve power.
After the battery has been fully charged, we expect it will take 18 minutes. The runtime can be significantly reduced by using the Boost Mode.
4. Operation
The dashboard of the Hoover Impulse Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner BH53020 is located above the handle. It’s easy to see and reach.
Turn on the vacuum by pressing the Trigger TWICE to turn it on. Then, press it ONCE to stop. The vacuum will automatically switch to Normal Suction Carpet Mode when it starts.
Simply press the Hard Floor button on your dashboard to transition to Hardwood floors. The Floor Brush will then slow down and not scatter any large debris.
The Boost Mode can remove stubborn dirt from any area, even those that have accumulated between the cushions.

5. Suction Power
The Lithium-Ion battery’s 24 Volt provides plenty of suction power virtually unaffected by light.
The suction power of the Hoover Impulse Cordless Stick BH53020 in Normal Mode was higher than we had expected. This tool has the power to remove dirt and hair from medium-sized rugs.
Boost Mode provides superior suction for almost any problem you may encounter.

6. User Friendliness
The Hoover Impulse Cordless Stick vacuum cleaner BH53020 was very simple to use. It takes about one minute to learn how to use the swivel steering. It is extremely maneuverable because the head can swivel to 90 degrees.
The 5.6 lb. The overall weight is not significant unless you are severely disabled. It weighs only 3.5 lbs in the Handheld mode. With the Dusting Brush attached. Although a motorized miniature brush would be nice, the cost would be higher.
Simply press the lower button to empty the Dirt Cup. Because we were unaware of how filthy my floor was, we filled the dust cup too full. Some carpet fibers and hair did adhere to the filter’s recess.
The upper release button allows you to access the Filter compartment. This will allow the entire Dirt Cup assembly and vacuum body to separate. The filter cartridge is made of a sponge and washable paper-type media. NOTE: A second filter cartridge is available.
Motorized Floor Brush, Extension Tube, and Accessories attach and detach easily. Vaseline was applied to the male end of the extension tube, which helped it fit better.
Negative Customer Reviews?
There have been a lot of negative reviews on Amazon since we reviewed the vacuum. Customers complain about “lackluster suction” and “plugs up easily.”
Customers complaining of diminished or no suction are not following the Operator Manual. The sticker attached to the dirt cup says: “Rinse Filter often for MAXIMUM SUCTION.”
A cordless stick vacuum filter is about 1/3 as large as a full-size upright vacuum. They require more frequent cleaning.
This vacuum model has an average score of 4.0 from 5 at other sellers like Walmart.
Recommendation
The new Eureka RapidClean Pro Cordless is a great alternative to the Hoover Impulse. However, you might be hesitant about negative customer reviews. The price is very affordable; it has the same quality, cleaning performance, and more features.
The Hoover Impulse BH53020 vacuum is a great option for those who want cord-free operation and a grab-and-go vacuum but don’t want a mortgage on their house.
It can clean vinyl, tile, hardwood floors, area rugs, and low-pile carpets.
This vacuum is great for the price and is better than any that costs twice as much. The Hoover Impulse BH53020 is our recommendation!
Bottom Line
The new Hoover Impulse Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner, BH53020, is as good as we expected.
It was fun to use, and we had no problems (save for the tight tube-to-body fit).
Hoover didn’t make the BH53020 too complicated, we think. The design and operation of this vacuum are simple, and it does exactly what you would expect.
